American Football Emerges

American style Football, not to be confused with futbol or soccer, is perhaps the most popular spectator sport in the nation. Mainly attributed to it’s fast pace of play, high energy and sheer brutality – football generates billions of dollars in revenue and makes the stars of the game true celebrities and icons. If you grew up in the United States in the last century chances are you have experienced Sundays in the living room with the family watching a game of football. Owning a football team can be described as how we knight people in America and nearly all of the major market cities in the US have a professional football team and feeder system. 

The game of football emerged largely from early forms of soccer and combined that with elements of the sport of rugby. The difference between these and American style football are the formation of a scrimmage line, blocking, the introduction of “downs” and rules of distance that need to be achieved to retain possession of the ball. The ever-popular forward pass also revolutionized and defined the game during its formative years. Initially the highest form of the game was played on the collegiate level but now there is the NFL as well as youth and high school leagues. The National Football League (NFL) is the sport’s highest level and each year a champion of the world is crowned in the ever-popular Super Bowl (each year the Super Bowl breaks the previous year’s record as the most watched telecast in the world). The NFL dates back to the 1920s when players began to receive compensation for playing the game – hence giving it a “professional” league status. Modern games as a format – as we see them today – began around 1932 with playoff games. The field also formally began looking closely akin to what it looks like today – with goal posts, hash marks and the like.

Football is a fast paced, grueling and oftentimes brutal sport. Sprinting, hitting, blocking, jumping, passing and throwing all happen oftentimes just during one play in the game. There’s a reason the football field is called the “gridiron”. Football is anaerobic in nature and the players need to have strong, short explosive energy sets and be able to carry these on for the four quarters of the game. There is very little time to recover between plays so football players are usually in peak physical condition. Extreme endurance, substantial muscular strength, power and agility are all prerequisites of the game. Football players will have well defined arms – especially the biceps and triceps. They will need these to do the tackling and blocking aka the “combat” portion of the game. Strong pecs and delts are also required as part and parcel of the upper body training that needs to be well defined. Strong core muscles will help in conjunction with strong legs for running and jumping. Athletes will need to work their hamstrings, quads and glutes religiously. If you have strong legs you will be able to jump higher and run faster than the opposing player. You will also be able to last longer than your opponents – a big key to winning football games. Football is often described as a “game of inches” – with that unit of measure often being the difference between winning and losing a contest.

Nutrition for Football Players

Football is extremely exhausting, as we’ve discussed previously. As such, the athletes playing the game need to focus keenly on their diets. Their diets should be low fat with higher than normal amounts of carbs. As such –  things such as grilled chicken, frozen yogurt and bagels will find their way to the athletes plates. Generally, the football diet should be two-thirds carbs and the other third being comprised of low fat proteins. No processed foods and minimal alcohol intake are recommended. Turkey and lots of fruits and vegetables as well as protein supplements are recommended for the athletes.  Additionally – waffles, eggs, steak, pasta with beef or chicken or buffalo meat and salads can help keep the energy up whilst providing some variety in the diet. Simple sugars and caffeine should be weeded out of the diet and football players must imbibe higher than normal amounts of water and juices. Football players need to have plenty of high quality foodstuffs to endure the rigors of the game and the long season.
